Turtle release in Puerto Escondido

Turtle camps at Bacocho, Palmarito and Barra de Colotepec

Releasing olive ridley hatchlings at sunset is a favourite family plan. It is run by turtle camps that protect the nests on the beach and live off visitors' contributions.

Where

The best-known camps are Vive Mar, with hatcheries at Bacocho beach (about 4 km from the main bay), Punta Colorada, Agua Dulce and Palmarito; Campamento Tortuguero Palmarito, the oldest, at Delfines beach; and the Boca Barra camp at Barra de Colotepec.

What time

Releases are in the late afternoon, around 4 or 5 pm, before sunset, with a short talk first. Some days there are no hatchlings: call or message the camp before you go.

Which season

Olive ridleys nest on these beaches and the eggs incubate for 40 to 60 days in the hatcheries; most releases happen in the second half of the year. Ask the camp whether there are hatchlings that day.

How much

Camps ask a contribution per turtle you release (around 100 pesos at the best-known camps). It pays for the hatcheries, the night patrols that rescue eggs and the staff.

How to do it right

You get the hatchling in a gourd bowl: do not touch it with your hands or drop it. Set it on the sand a few metres from the water so it walks to the sea on its own; that is how it orients itself. No flash, and do not light up the beach at night: lights confuse the turtles.
