Water that lights up blue when you move your hand or paddle is one of the most searched things to do in Puerto Escondido. You see it at Manialtepec Lagoon, west of town, on night boat tours.
At Manialtepec Lagoon, about 16 km west of Puerto Escondido on Highway 200 toward Pinotepa Nacional (20 to 30 minutes by car). It is a mangrove lagoon separated from the sea by a sandbar.
Plankton (tiny organisms in the water) that give off blue light when the water moves. In the dark lagoon it shows far more than in the open sea.
On moonless or nearly moonless nights (around the new moon): with a full moon you barely see it. It tends to be stronger in the rainy season, from summer on, but it changes from year to year and week to week. Ask the operator how it looks that week before booking.
The easiest option is a night boat tour of about 2 to 2.5 hours with hotel pickup; online platforms list them from about 45 US dollars per person. With the lagoon's boatmen, a shared boat for a group costs less per person. Some tours let you get in the water to see the glow around you.
Swimsuit and a change of clothes if you plan to swim, sandals that can get wet, insect repellent for the mangroves and a light layer for the ride back. The glow hardly shows on phone photos: it is something to see.
The lagoon is home to hundreds of bird species (herons, pelicans, ducks) and has boat and kayak trips through the mangroves, best early in the morning.
